Things I’m Interested In

  • Writing

Writing is some straight up magic. It’s telepathy. Words on a page communicating an idea from my head to yours. The question is: how do you get good at putting words on a page to do that?

  • Teaching

Dad was a teacher and I had amazing teachers all my life. Great teaching can change somebody’s worldview and the direction of their life. The ability to educate and inspire somebody is a skill and a gift to the world. How do you become an all-time great at it?

  • Learning

Learning is an obsession. I loved school. I would like to learn all of the things, everywhere, all the time. How do I do that?

  • Reading

I was the kid reading in class, with a flashlight under a sheet at night, and I brought a stack of books bigger than me on family vacation.

Fiction: If a 15 year old would be interested in it, I probably am too. Fantasy (LOTR, Kingkiller, The Thief), Sci-Fi (Red Rising, Ender’s Game), and anything to do with mythology (Neil Gaiman is a legend).

Non-Fiction: If it has to do with people being better or teaching them how to be better, I’m into it.

How do I read all of the things?

  • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Just a lowly white belt figuring out how to wrestle better with people in their weird pajamas. Complex decision-making with the highest of stakes. So how do I stop getting crushed by them thicc bois at open mat?

  • Being an Athlete

It’s not quite fitness, not quite strength, not quite mobility. It’s re-discovering competition, peak performance, and the mindset of crushing your competition (which is usually myself). Soccer was my game, now it’s up for grabs.

Learning about the human body and encouraging myself to maximize its potential. How do you re-establish the best parts of athleticism in your day to day?

What I’m Working On

  1. Figuring out next steps post-PhD. Likely to leave academia, looking at learning design.

  2. This website and regular blogging. Here, I write about self-development, my experience with the PhD, my re-discovery of being an athlete (including jiu-jitsu), and what I’ve been reading lately.

  3. Roam Research, Zettelkasten, and Life Management. A disciple of Beau Haan and the Roam Book Club.

  4. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I suck at it. And that’s good.

  5. Swimming. I also suck at this.
